Wait, Wait, You’re Wrong About Toxic Positivity…
Toxic positivity is an obsession with positive thinking. It is the belief that people should put a positive spin on all experiences, even those that are profoundly tragic.
Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me has no idea even as an NPR program what the real definition of toxic positivity is because even if they claim to be smart people they have never experienced true pain, pain that takes a long time to heal and hurts more when people tell you to let it go, forget about it, and get over it. I know because I was a victim of bullying and discrimination because I have high-functioning Aspberger’s and when horrible things happen to us we always remember them vividly to the point that even helpful people can trigger painful feelings. There are many vivid things I remember about the director who made my love of learning music a living hell.
She would lock the doors so no one could take a break from rehearsal, bragged about another student because she was on a magazine, got mad at me for calling out a piece was by Gustav Holst, marked a giant X on Moorside March which sent me crying in the bathroom with a smile on her face. I filed a complaint against her and because of this, she threatened staff, students, and even the dean who is a very kind person. The College did nothing but give her a sabbatical and bring her back full time yet every day I’m told that it is my fault and problem, that I should forgive her and forget her, that I should have said nothing and listened to her, that I should write nice things and not tell the truth.
These people think they are helping when they have or have not given me or others any effort to make my life and the lives of other victims better, they think The Secret is a textbook when it fails all categories of sociology, ethics, psychology, education, and emotional well being. If these people wanted to help without fluffy words and fluffy colors, shouldn’t they be the ones healing the sick with actual medicine, giving myself and others support with their time and money, helping students and their peers succeed by helping them and teaching them how to help them do the same? If NPR was committed to the progressive values it claims to hold so dearly wouldn’t they…
- Respect Neurodiversity by hiring disabled and impaired reporters, writers, and editors.
- Stop funding Garrison Keilor’s rhetoric which fueled Christian Nationalism and hate towards progressive journalism and causes.
- Block donations from corporations that pollute and bust union workers.
- Hold corrupt non-profits accountable for abuse and neglect
- Be committed to truth and not mocking and both siding progressives and their causes
- Protest alongside unions of all kinds
- Withhold College Fraternity donations and support the victims of fraternal brothers and sisters who died from hazing.
- Hold colleges accountable for corrupt, abusive, and neglectful behavior no matter how big or small.
If NPR cared they would honor the words of the radical Suffrigets, Deeds not Words, not the News from Lake Wobegon from a Nazi Clown in red shoes.
