The Tale of the Sturdy Tree
In a forest, there was a tree that thought it was taller than the other trees and would stay a tall tree, “No matter what happens to me I will stay put!”.
When the tree grew a bunch of acorns it got even prouder until a hungry squirrel came along.” All I want is your acorns”, but the tree shook off the squirrel and said, “You’re not having my acorns they are mine! No matter what happens I will stay put!” Eventually, the squirrel took only one acorn to eat and grow another tree.
Then a rainstorm came through the forest and a river flowed right through the sturdy tree, “No matter what happens to me I will stay put” the river said, “Please tree let me pass through” “No you are not passing through, No matter what happens to me I will stay put!” the river still went underneath the roots. Years passed and the river got bigger and the squirrel’s family got bigger yet the tree still stood until toadstools began to grow on it, “You ugly toadstools” and then the tree fell and became driftwood allowing both the river and the squirrel to cross.
Parent advocates think the same rules and gates work when they don’t because over time their children change, develop, and grow. Eventually, sturdy trees have to fall to make room for other trees to grow and change. Parents have to allow their Autistic and Asperger’s children to grow and develop and respect their emotions, individuality, and needs.
