I feel the same way as a German American about The Sound of Music and how did not do true justice to what the actual Von Trapp had to struggle with when they came to America. They struggled with xenophobia and assimilation along with many other German Immigrants and German Speaking Immigrants. Books like Der Struwwelpeter and Max und Mortz were burned in rural schools in the 1920's when our culture was demonized by Prohibitionist. Yes they sung songs in their language but they were treated like novelties and were not astatically valued for the music they made because of that musical.
